Fourth Culture collects in the cracks between converging worlds—it could be a melting patbingsu topped with apples and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, eaten in the shadow of the Manhattan bridge; a third culture kid shirking assimilation in a new country, carving an identity separate from anything they’ve known before; a Tibetan family whose escape from Chinese occupation resulted in a diasporic and polyglot upbringing across Nepal, Darjeeling, and New York City. The previously composed and identifiable dessert changes state, pooling into a novel flavor greater than the sum of its parts.

This is not a celebration of seamless unity, but rather an interrogation of the neat narratives that define contemporary cultural “fusion”. These are perspectives informed by conflicts and contradictions at the intersection of parents, place, gender, geopolitics, and race.

Stories and essays posted here offer several converging perspectives, often told through a culinary lens, illustrating the bifurcation inherent in cuisine and cultural identity.

Whatever it means—Fourth Culture, that ephemeral space in the middle of one’s triple Venn diagram—we’ll figure it out together.

On a semi-infrequent basis, I can also promise you a bit of music, and some cultural critiques, with a healthy sprinkling of MSG.
